When it comes to home cooking, it’s not just about traditional meals like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You also need to address snacks and snack foods. One of the most iconic snacks is Chips & Dip. This can range from a variety of combinations, but next to tortilla chips and salsa, potato chips and onion dip are pretty close to the top. This recipe for French Onion Dip Mix is one that makes it easy to have a single snack or make a platter for a party.

One really important part of making this mix is having a good airtight container to store it in. You can use any container that is used to store spices. I prefer to use these wide mouth jars with clasp closures. For the most part I like that it’s easy to just get a spoon in there to measure it out. But they also look nice so that’s a bonus.
While you can use this combined with sour cream to make the most delicious dip for your potato chips (BTW, I love Kettle chips with this), it can also be used in lots of other recipes. It makes a great addition to a cream sauce over pasta. You can use them to season proteins- chicken, pork or beef. You can also mix it into ground meat for burgers or meatballs or meatloaf.
Probably the best part of making this mix yourself is that you get to control what’s in it. You control the salt as well as omit the preservatives that get added to store bought mixes. I have listed adding the mixture to sour cream, which is more “traditional.” You could also use a plain Greek yogurt (make sure it’s plain and NOT vanilla) in the same ratio. If you want a less stiff result, you can add in some heavy cream, buttermilk or mayonnaise. Just be sure to taste as you go so that you don’t loose too much of the onion dip flavors.
