Orzo is often confused for rice or barley in recipes. It is even more of a misunderstanding when you learn that orzo actually means barley in Italian. But it is truly a semolina pasta that works great in one pan meals or cold preparations. Orzo is a great pasta for one pan meals.

Substitutes and Variations:

You can use ground pork, turkey or chicken in place of the ground beef. Just be sure to adjust the fat content. While orzo is the best pasta for this recipe, small shells or elbows can be used as well, just increase cook time. Also if you prefer American cheese over cheddar cheese on your burgers, that will work too.

Suggestions for Sides:

You can totally serve this with some tater tots or French fries. A nice garden salad is also a good idea. But really its a fully filling and hearty meal on its own. You could also serve this up with my Italian Roast Carrots recipe.
