What Did You Read This Month? Book Review Link-up #21

Welcome to the Monthly Book Report and Book Review Link-up #20 – March 2026!

On the First Wednesday of each month I will be sharing my latest read – which could be a cookbook, a celebrity chef biography or memoir, a lifestyle book, a gardening book, a homemaking book or maybe even a cozy kitchen mystery book. They may be paper books, eBooks, or audio books. I have challenged myself to read or listen to at least one book per week, and I plan to share that with you all here.

In addition to my Book Report, there will be a Book Report LInky – a chance for all of you to share your own book review blog post (TWO per blog, please). We want to see what had you page flipping, can’t put it down, totally captivated.

Lastly will be a few Featured Reviews from the previous month’s shared posts. This will be a post picked at random by the host. Each host will likely pick their own features – so that’s multiple chances to be featured!

If you have any suggestions for me on book I should check out – please let me know!

Brief Description of the book:

Whether you’re an experienced plant medicine user or just looking for a natural approach to managing your health and healing with herbal remedies, The Forgotten Home Apothecary is for you.

My Review:

I’ve had my eye on this book for the last two years and finallly got it. I am thoroughly impressed by the detail and explainations with in it. I was worried that the recipes would have a lot of ridiculous, expensive and/or hard to obtain ingredients. But I was pleasantly surpised by how many of the ingredients are things I already have or could easily get. The instructions are very easy to follow and have great details and notes.

Title: The Inspector and Mrs. Jefferies: Book 1

Author: Emily Brightwell

Publication Date: December 2013

Published by: Berkley Publishing Group

Listed Price: $11.79 (paperback) $5.99(audiobook)

About the Author:

Emily Brightwell was born in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. Her family moved to Southern California in 1959 and she grew up in Pasadena. After graduating from California State University Fullerton, she decided to work her way around the world and started in England. She didn’t get any further because she met future her husband there, got married and moved back to California. While living in Long Beach, she decided to pursue her dream and become a writer – despite having two children and a full-time job. She began the Mrs. Jeffries series in 1993 with “The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries” and has written forty more mysteries in the series in the following twenty-nine years. Emily’s last Mrs. Jeffries mystery : “Mrs. Jeffries Aims to Win” was published in August 2023. Almost all books are available as audio books (unabridged) and most are available in large print format.

Brief Description of the book:

This charming series of Victorian murder mysteries features mild-mannered Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard and, more importantly, Mrs Jeffries, his housekeeper. A policeman’s widow herself, her quick wits allow her to nudge the Inspector in the right direction to solve the crime.

When a doctor is discovered dead in his own office, Mrs Jeffries is on the look-out for a prescription for murder, determined to discover the culprit, despite how her employer feels about interviewing suspects . . . “He hated questioning people. He could never tell whether or not someone was actually lying to him, and he knew, shocking as it was, that there were some people who lied to the police on a regular basis.”

My Review:

I am currently on book 3 of this series of mysteries by Emily Brightwell and quite enjoying it. They are simple but engaging stories of how the housekeeper and her crew help the slightly slow but earnest police inspector they serve. I love that they book has excellent detail – especially since I am actually listening to the books. I drive for 30 minutes each way to work four or five days a week so I am usually able to listen to a whole novel in a little over a week. However this book is entirely family-friendly and I can listen to it while I cook dinner and do my other homestead tasks without worry that my family might walk in on an inappropriate moment. With 41 books in the series – I will be interested to see how far down the line I make it.

  1. I love the sound of the apothecary book. I’ve actually just got a different one to review, which is focused on plants and herbs of the Orkney Islands off Scotland. Thanks for the link-up, it’s great to have one dedicated to books.
